A trial is underway in Wapello County where 27-year-old Simplice Nguepnang is facing serious charges, including sexual abuse, human trafficking, and providing drugs to minors. Prosecutors say he targeted underage girls through social media, offering them drugs and alcohol before sexually assaulting them.
The first witness, who was 13 at the time, described being contacted by Nguepnang on Facebook and later assaulted at his apartment in Ottumwa. Another girl, 14, also testified about meeting him through a mutual friend.
Nguepnang is facing 11 felony charges. His defense team isn’t disputing that sexual contact occurred but is asking the jury to focus on whether the charges meet the legal standards required for conviction.
More witnesses are expected today, with closing arguments likely beginning this afternoon.
