Today marks one year since a powerful tornado tore through Greenfield in southwest Iowa, leaving behind a trail of destruction, injuring 35 people, and claiming the lives of five—including one woman in nearby Adams County.
To honor the lives lost and reflect on the community’s resilience, Greenfield will hold a solemn afternoon prayer service. Bells will ring out across town, followed by two minutes of silence at 3:40 p.m.—the exact time the tornado struck the town last year.
Later in the evening, residents will gather again in the town square for a commemorative program. The event will feature stories and reflections from those who experienced the storm and helped in its aftermath, offering a moment of unity and remembrance.
The Greenfield tornado was one of 11 that swept across Iowa that afternoon, as recorded by the National Weather Service. It also led to one of three major disaster declarations in Iowa during 2024, issued by then-President Joe Biden.
