Significant changes are coming to Ottumwa’s roadways as the city council has greenlit two major street improvement projects aimed at boosting safety and updating aging infrastructure.
The most substantial upgrade will take place along Mary Street, stretching from South Ferry to Shaul Avenue. This corridor, which sees heavy traffic from Liberty Intermediate School, will undergo a complete overhaul. According to City Engineer Phillip Burgmeier, the road is long overdue for repairs, having been constructed in the 1970s and heavily patched in recent years—often unsuccessfully.
“This isn’t just about fixing potholes,” Burgmeier said. “We’re redesigning this stretch to be safer for students and more efficient for drivers.”
The project, estimated at $2.7 million, will be funded primarily through state contributions, covering about $2.1 million, while the rest will come from the city’s sewer and water departments.
Key features of the renovation include:
- A newly widened sidewalk to improve pedestrian access for students
- A dedicated left-turn lane at the intersection of Mary and Ferry to relieve traffic congestion
Construction is slated to begin in early June, with completion targeted for Fall.
In addition, a second project will focus on Washington Street in the downtown area. Planned work includes sewer line replacement and fresh pavement. While local residents—especially those living between 4th and 5th Streets—may need to adjust their parking arrangements temporarily, businesses along the route will remain open and accessible throughout construction.
Burgmeier emphasized the importance of keeping the city’s infrastructure updated. “These projects are an investment in safety and quality of life,” he noted.
