The Iowa Department of Transportation has announced a temporary closure of westbound Highway 5 while crews complete emergency shoulder repairs.

Westbound Highway 5 will be closed at the South River bridge construction site on Wednesday, July 29, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to the Iowa DOT, the emergency work is needed to repair a shoulder drop-off in the construction zone that has reportedly caused multiple vehicles to suffer blown tires.

During the closure, westbound traffic will be detoured north on Highway 316 through Runnells, then north on Southeast 114th Street and west on Highway 163 to Highway 65.

Drivers traveling west on Highway 5 should allow extra time to reach their destinations and follow all posted detour signs while the closure is in place.
