Lynne was born in 1953 in Keokuk, Iowa, to Glenn and Helen Shafer. She grew up on the family farm, where she loved riding horses, exploring the surrounding woods, and tagging along with her dad. She graduated from Central Lee High School in 1971 and Iowa State University in 1975.

That same year, while teaching home economics at Fairfield High School, she met Doug Johnson. The two immediately connected over their love of family farming, shared optimism, and playful senses of humor. They married on June 26, 1976, and moved to the Johnson family’s century farm east of Fairfield. Lynne worked closely with an architect to design a beautiful brick home, where she and Doug raised their three children, Eric, Jami, and Kristofor.

Lynne continued teaching home economics and consumer sciences at Fairfield High School until 1980, but she was just as comfortable working on the farm. Over the years, she drove and unloaded straight trucks, worked livestock, and delivered meals during planting and harvest. She especially enjoyed being the farm’s “go-fer,” picking up parts and supplies and keeping everyone else going.

From 1985 to 1994, she operated her own half-acre red raspberry patch on the farm, welcoming u-pick customers every season and selling berries to local grocery stores.

Lynne was deeply involved in her community. In 1989, she served on the Jefferson County Extension Council, where she helped establish educational programs for children and adults. She was also appointed to the Jefferson County Sanitation Board and served for nine years on the board of Access Energy Electric Cooperative, becoming only the second woman to hold that position. She spent three of those years as vice president. She was a founding member and secretary of the Jefferson County Rural Water District and a member of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce. Her faith was an important part of her life. Her family helped found a church near Argyle, Iowa. She was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Fairfield and later became a founding member of Word of Life Church in Fairfield.

Lynne never stopped looking for opportunities to learn. In 2001, she earned a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Iowa, which included a chance to study in Spain alongside Eric and Jami. She went on to teach Spanish at Fairfield Middle School. As recently as this spring, she attended a workshop on farm management, marketing, and grass-based livestock operations.

After the devastating loss of her husband and mother- and father-in-law in 2007–08, Lynne took over management of the family farm. For the next nineteen years, she cared for the land and kept the farm going, building terraces and overseeing repairs and improvements to its buildings and facilities. In recent years, she helped her youngest son, Kristofor, establish a grass-fed meat operation on the family land, carrying the family’s farming tradition into another generation.

From 2013 to 2016, Lynne taught beginning parenting classes through ISU Extension, helping new parents learn to care for babies and toddlers and prepare nutritious meals. In 2024, she received the Iowa Master Farm Homemaker Award in recognition of her contributions to agriculture, family, and community life.

Lynne loved people, and she loved to laugh. It’s hard to say what she enjoyed most: helping Kristofor pasture sheep and cattle on the family farm, taking her grandchildren to swimming lessons, handing out Halloween treats at the fairgrounds, organizing Open Class exhibits at the Jefferson County Fair, teaching vacation Bible school, shopping for birthday gifts, baking pies with her granddaughters, taking her family to the Iowa State Fair, experimenting with new recipes at home, or giving (and receiving) long hugs.

She especially loved Christmastime: making her famous cinnamon rolls and caramels, reading “When Joy Came” on Christmas morning, and smiling as her family opened the presents she’d thoughtfully picked out. Her family and friends will remember her beautiful smile, musical laugh, creative problem-solving, and willingness to drop everything to be there for someone who needed her.

Lynne is survived by her three children, Eric (Jenna) Johnson of Iowa City, Jami Johnson of Iowa City, and Kristofor Johnson of Fairfield; her three beloved grandchildren, Hazel, Piper, and Bodhi; her sister, Patricia (John) Blacksmith of Argyle; and her sisters-in-law, Dian (Gerry) Schleier of Keokuk and Dee (Harold) Sandquist of Fairfield.
