Iowa State Patrol Warns Drivers About Deer Collisions

The Iowa State Patrol is reminding motorists to use extra caution on the roads as October and November bring an increased risk of deer-vehicle collisions across the state.

Deer activity typically increases during the fall because of breeding season and crop harvesting. Harvesting can force deer out of fields and into nearby roadways. Deer populations have also increased following recovery from recent disease impacts, according to state deer biologists.

Motorists are encouraged to follow several safety precautions:

  • Reduce speed at night: Watch the roadway and scan ditches on both sides for deer.
  • Use high-beam headlights when appropriate: High beams can help drivers spot deer and movement ahead when there is no oncoming traffic.
  • Avoid sudden swerving: If a deer enters your path, brake firmly while maintaining control of your vehicle and staying in your lane. Swerving can increase the risk of a more serious crash.
  • Know what to do after a collision: Turn on your hazard lights and move to the shoulder if it is safe to do so. Contact law enforcement or emergency services when needed.

Drivers should also remember that deer often travel in groups. If one crosses the road, others may follow.

The Iowa State Patrol urges motorists to stay alert, maintain a safe speed and remain prepared for unexpected wildlife crossings throughout the fall season.
