A southeast Iowa woman is facing multiple felony charges stemming from two separate theft investigations in Henry County.
Megan Miller, 27, of Morning Sun has been charged with two counts of Theft in the Second Degree, both Class D Felonies, Possession of a Controlled Substance — Second Offense, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. Miller was booked on Monday, September 7th.
Stolen Currency, Stamps, and Coins
According to court documents, the first theft investigation began on March 12th when a victim reported a burglary of her deceased relative’s home in which an unknown amount of foreign currency, coins, and rare stamps had been removed from the residence between March 8th and March 12th. A single piece of foreign currency and one stamp remained at the residence and were photographed and shared with local law enforcement.
On March 22nd, a large amount of foreign currency was located in plain view in a vehicle driven by Miller during a traffic stop by the Mount Pleasant Police Department. A Henry County deputy was advised and seized the vehicle. A search warrant was later applied for, granted, and executed on the vehicle, resulting in the recovery of foreign currency, stamps, coins, drug paraphernalia, and apparent illegal narcotics. Miller was questioned and admitted to believing or having knowledge that the items — excluding the narcotics and paraphernalia — were stolen. She also made admission statements that methamphetamine and smoking pipes were inside her purse, which was located in the vehicle at the time. Midwest Coins of Burlington provided an estimated value of $1,800 for the recovered stolen items based on photographs provided by investigators.
Stolen Trailer and Ladder
According to a criminal complaint in a separate incident, the second theft investigation began on August 24th when the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the theft of an enclosed black trailer valued at approximately $5,000. Through text messages, investigators determined Miller was in possession of the trailer. On September 3rd, it was further determined that Miller was also in possession of an orange ladder valued at approximately $400. The trailer was recovered on September 5th and transported to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office where it was placed into evidence. Miller was subsequently arrested at her residence in Morning Sun in Louisa County.
Miller is being held on a combined bond of $12,300 — $7,300 cash or surety in one case and $5,000 cash or surety in the other. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for September 18th in both cases.
