The Ottumwa community came together Friday morning to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the firefighters, police officers and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice that day.
The remembrance ceremony was led by Ottumwa Fire and Emergency Services Chief Sean Canto. Those gathered reflected on the events of 25 years ago, when 2,996 people from 90 countries were killed in the terrorist attacks.
The ceremony also recognized the first responders who ran toward danger as others were trying to escape. Among those killed were 343 New York City firefighters and 23 police officers.
The morning began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, performed by Melanie Cividanes, Heaven Colyer and Jocelyn Davis.
Iowa Representative Hans Wilz spoke to those attending, followed by remarks from Ottumwa Mayor Ben Foote, who shared his own memories and reflections of September 11.
Rev. Joseph M. Sia offered a prayer, focusing on remembrance, hope and the strength of a community coming together during difficult times.
One of the most solemn moments came when the IAFF Local 395 Honor Guard performed the traditional Signal 5-5-5-5. The ceremony included the tolling of the fire bell, honoring firefighters who answered their final alarm and never returned home.
Music played an important role throughout the ceremony. Marcus Storto and Charles Smith performed Taps, creating a quiet and emotional moment for those in attendance.
Chief Canto delivered the closing remarks after Glenn Chatfield played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, bringing the ceremony to an emotional close.
The gathering served as a reminder that, even 25 years later, the events of September 11 remain deeply remembered by communities across the country.
