The Oskaloosa Police Department is offering free First Responder Awareness Stickers to help provide emergency responders with important information about individuals who may have a disability, medical condition, or other circumstance that could affect how they communicate or respond during an emergency.
The stickers are designed to alert police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders to information that may help them better understand a situation and adjust their approach when needed.
The department currently has stickers identifying Autism Spectrum Disorder and diabetes, along with customizable stickers that can be used to identify other disabilities, medical conditions, or important information.
For vehicles, the department recommends placing the sticker on the driver’s-side rear of the vehicle. Home stickers should be placed near the doorbell or on a storm door, where first responders are likely to see them as they approach.
The goal of the program is to provide first responders with useful information before they need it, potentially helping them communicate more effectively and respond appropriately during an emergency.
The Oskaloosa Police Department expressed its appreciation to Jennifer Braaksma-Norgaila for funding the project and to MUSCO for designing and donating the first batch of stickers.
Residents who believe they or someone in their household could benefit from the stickers are encouraged to stop by the Oskaloosa Police Department to pick up one or two at no cost.
