The Ottumwa Police Department says a man is in custody after an alleged hit-and-run involving a child on Thursday afternoon.

Tristan Verrips, 26, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury (aggravated misdemeanor) and driving while suspended (simple misdemeanor).

According to Lieutenant Jason Parmenter, officers were called to the 1500 block of Albia Road at approximately 4:07 PM regarding a child that was struck by a vehicle. Responding officers were told by witnesses that the vehicle left the scene but officers were given an accurate description of the striking vehicle.

A joint investigation by the police department and the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office led investigators to Verrips’ residence, located at the 18000 block of Highway 34.

Verrips was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. He was later freed after posting a $2,000 bond.

Verrips has a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 1st.
