The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning Iowans to prepare for several days of hot and humid weather beginning Monday and continuing through at least the middle of the week.
The greatest impacts are expected across central and southern Iowa, where heat index values could reach 100 to 103 degrees from Monday through Wednesday. A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of the region during that period.
While temperatures may not reach the typical 105-degree threshold each day, forecasters say the combination of prolonged heat and limited relief overnight is prompting the multi-day advisory.
A few isolated showers and thunderstorms could develop tonight and Monday, with about a 20% chance of storms. While most storms are expected to remain limited, an isolated strong storm cannot be ruled out.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions during the heat, including drinking plenty of fluids, limiting strenuous outdoor activities and checking on those who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.
The hot and humid pattern could continue into the latter part of the week.
