A retail sales agronomist with Brevant Seeds suggests the soybean crop in the Upper Midwest is brimming with potential.
Casey Schleusner is based in northern Iowa and says fields look clean heading into a critical time for soybean development.
“Disease pressure right now in soybeans, it’s not really too bad when you think of the state of crop right now. Actually, it’s in a very, very healthy state. But just like anything, disease will come two weeks after maybe an application of fungicide needed to be done. So I think growers are still investing in that side of things, which is good because they see the yield potential.”
He tells Brownfield soybeans will need timely rains this month.
“Could be a lot of fun. We have the vegetative growth to handle it, pod filling is beginning (and) we’re past R3.5 right now because a lot of the fungicide has gone on. So this is the time when soybean yield is made.”
USDA’s latest weekly crop update rates 78 percent of Iowa soybeans in good to excellent condition, with 61 percent setting pods.
Corn is called 80 percent good to excellent, and 4 percent is denting.
