Keokuk County residents can pick up a free radon test kit at Keokuk County Public Health in Sigourney while supplies last, according to a post from the health department.
Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up in homes over time. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know if a home has elevated radon levels.
Kits are available at Keokuk County Public Health, located at 1303 200th Avenue in Sigourney, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The homeowner must pick up the kit in person. Those with questions can call 641-622-3575.
If a test comes back with high radon levels, residents will be asked to test their home a second time to confirm the results. If the second test also confirms high levels, qualifying residents may have the opportunity to receive assistance with radon mitigation funding.
This project is supported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of a financial assistance award totaling $209,040,063.71, with 100 percent of funding provided by CMS and HHS.
