The Van Buren Community Players have announced their Winter 2027 production will be the Broadway musical Come From Away, according to a social media post from the organization.
Based on a true story, Come From Away depicts what happened when 7,000 airline passengers were stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The show tells the story of how a small community opened its homes and hearts to strangers from around the world in the midst of tragedy and uncertainty.
The production will feature an ensemble of approximately 12 to 20 actors portraying a variety of characters, with auditions open to high school students and adults. A diverse cast is needed. Auditions are scheduled for December 2026, with performances set for February 26th, 27th, and 28th, 2027. The show also features an onstage band performing Celtic folk and rock music, and the organization said musicians should watch for additional information on how to get involved.
Those interested in working behind the scenes are also encouraged to get involved. The production is seeking help with set crew, set construction, makeup, and other backstage roles. Those interested can contact Kathleen Paulek at 319-288-0749.
Come From Away will mark the Van Buren Community Players’ 67th production. The organization has been bringing live theatre to the community since 1963, when it launched with a production of South Pacific. Over the decades the Players have performed on stages built with metal milk crates and plywood in the high school gym before finding a permanent home at the Roberts Memorial Center, and have continued producing winter musicals, children’s theatre workshops, and other productions throughout the years.
