A north Iowa farmer says corn is already tasseling.

April Hemmes farms near Hampton.

“You know the old grandpa adage ‘knee high by the 4th of July’ and I have tassels everywhere.”

She tells Brownfield her earliest corn was planted before April 20th.

“And that is all starting to tassel and really popping, and looking beautiful. We’ve got those nice rains, and then now this hot, humid weather, and boy does the corn love it.”

USDA’s latest weekly crop update shows 8 percent of corn in the state silking, slightly behind the five-year average of 10 percent.  Seventy-eight percent of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition.

Soybeans are developing faster than the usual pace with 37 percent blooming and 3 percent setting pods.  Beans are 74 percent good to excellent.
