Pekin Community Schools has issued a statement to families regarding Iowa House File 2591, signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds on June 2nd, outlining how the district plans to implement the new legislation when it takes effect August 1st.
The law creates two significant changes to athletic eligibility rules in Iowa. First, eighth-grade students may now be permitted to participate in high school athletics. Second, the transfer and open enrollment period of varsity ineligibility will change from 90 school days to 140 calendar days.
Activities Director Klynt Weber said the district wants families to understand that the law will not result in a blanket policy automatically placing all eighth graders into high school sports. Instead, any case involving an eighth-grade student participating at the high school level will be reviewed individually. The process would begin with a recommendation from the varsity head coach, followed by layers of administrative review and approval, with consideration given to the student’s overall well-being, activity readiness, and program needs.
Weber acknowledged that situations may arise where participation at the high school level becomes appropriate for an eighth-grade student, but emphasized that each case will be handled on its own merits.
