Norman H. Stein, 98, of Ottumwa died at 11:35 p.m. July 21, 2026 at Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa.

He was born August 25, 1927, in Ottumwa to Maurice David and Anna Catherine Rosenberg Stein.

A 1945 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Norman served in the U.S. Army. Starting in 1945, Norman and his father owned and operated Stein Furniture Store from where Norman retired in 1998.

He was a member of B’Nai Jacob Synagogue.

Norman never married or had any children of his own. However, Norman had two significant relationships in his life. The first was with Sandra Norton-Heil. Sandra’s son Walter Norton was very important to Norman. Walter and his wife Heather have two children, Mathew and Andy who visited Norman recently.

Norman’s second relationship and the “Love of his Life” was Marcene Richardson who proceeded him in death on June 6, 2007. Marcene’s daughter Sheryl Sucich and her two children thought of Norman as their grandfather. Lisa (Darrin) Ott and Matthew (Kristen) Bortz and their families were very important to Norman.

Norman also “adopted” Chris, Ian, and Aaron Logan and tried to teach them as much as possible about life, the furniture business, and finances. Norman really loved Ian and Aaron’s children: Evelyn, Maverick, Wendell and Josiah.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Norman spent his last few days at Serenity House Hospice in Oskaloosa. He felt cared for and at peace.

Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Thursday July 23rd at Ottumwa Jewish Cemetery with Rabbi Yossi Jacobson officiating.

Pallbearers will be Ian and Aaron Logan, Deran Dawson, and Dave Shaffer.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Chris Logan, Walter Norton, Arnold Sigel, and Steve Picray.

Because of the tender loving care Norman received through hospice at Serenity House, memorial contributions may be made to them.
