Mexico recently lifted import restrictions on certain U.S. pork products stemming from a pseudorabies outbreak earlier this year.
Erin Borror with the U.S. Meat Export Federation says Mexico had imposed precautionary measures following the detection of the disease in Iowa at the end of April.
“Mexico imposed restrictions, and those, thank God, were finally lifted at the beginning of this week. But we went through a series of six weeks of no trade with Mexico in offal, jowls, skins, fat, snout, stomach, a whole list of products.”
Speaking during the Iowa Farm Bureau Economic Summit last Friday, she said Mexico eventually limited restrictions to Iowa and Texas.
“And then just this week we had the full lifting of those restrictions. And great appreciation to USDA and to our partner organizations like NPPC in working to get those restrictions lifted.”
Mexico is the largest foreign buyer of U.S. pork, accounting for about one-third of all U.S. pork export volume.
