A Marion man has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm.
Edinton Grugbay Wright, 30, was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty on December 11, 2025, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. He will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
According to federal prosecutors, Wright had previously been convicted in federal court of being a drug user in possession of a firearm. After his release from prison, he began serving a term of supervised release in 2022.
Authorities said the latest case began when Cedar Rapids police attempted to stop a vehicle in which Wright was riding in the front passenger seat. The driver allegedly refused to stop and drove onto the front lawn of a residence.
Police said Wright and the driver then ran from the vehicle. While officers pursued Wright, authorities said he threw a loaded handgun onto the ground. Officers later located Wright and recovered the firearm.
Wright was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by U.S. District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. There is no parole in the federal prison system.
Wright remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service while awaiting transportation to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lisa C. Williams and Timothy Vavricek and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, which includes members of the FBI and Cedar Rapids Police Department.
