The Oskaloosa Police Department responded to a crisis intervention call at a temporary lodging facility in the 200 block of North 1st Street at approximately 1:26 p.m. on June 4.
According to a criminal complaint, officers were assisting crisis intervention personnel with removing a woman who had allegedly remained at the facility beyond the time allowed under her lodging agreement.
Court documents state that 42-year-old Candis Messamaker of Mystic was found lying on a couch in the living room and appeared to be pretending to sleep. Officers reportedly attempted several times to wake her and advised that she needed to leave the property or face arrest for trespassing.
When Messamaker failed to respond, officers conducted a sternum rub to check on her welfare. Authorities say she then opened her eyes, made eye contact with officers, and allegedly kicked her leg toward an officer in an attempt to make contact.
According to court records, officers tried several methods to persuade Messamaker to leave voluntarily. When they attempted to place her under arrest, she allegedly became physically resistant, struggled with officers, and stiffened her arms to prevent being handcuffed. She also reportedly refused to comply with officers’ commands.
Messamaker was transported to the Mahaska County Jail, where she is being held on a $2,000 cash or surety bond.
She is charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, an aggravated misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 15.
