The historic Hotel Ottumwa officially closed its doors on May 31, 2026, bringing an end to more than four decades of ownership by the Schwartz family. The downtown landmark, a fixture in the community for generations, is now set to begin a new chapter under local ownership.

Ottumwa residents Jeremiah and Chantelle Grooms have purchased the property and are currently working through the final steps of the sale, including transferring the necessary licenses. While specific renovation plans and a reopening timeline have not yet been announced, the couple is expected to take over operations once the transaction is finalized.

The closure marked the end of an era for the hotel, which had been owned and operated by the Schwartz family since 1982. The family made the decision to sell the property after previous negotiations with developers did not result in a completed deal.

Before closing, the hotel hosted a farewell concert in its ballroom on May 30, giving community members one last opportunity to celebrate the historic building and its legacy.

In addition to the hotel, the property is home to two longtime downtown establishments, the Tom Tom Tap, known for its 1950s-style atmosphere, and the Second Street Cafe. Both have been popular gathering places for residents and visitors alike.
