Virgil Duane Heidebrink, 91, of Ottumwa, died at 10:19 a.m. May 25, 2026 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
He was born December 19, 1934 in Rushmore, MN to Harm Sr. and Anna Marie Boots Heidebrink. He married Amelia Teresa Feldhacker March 12, 1959 at Sibley, IA.
A 1948 graduate from the Coolidge Country School, Virgil had lived in Rushmore and Adrian, MN, Creston, IA and Sun City, AZ.
Virgil loved working outdoors, beginning his career in the construction world with Glover Construction Inc., Luverne, MN/Boone, IA. He enjoyed driving the big rigs at Klooster Trucking, Adrian, MN, became half-owner and bidder at H&F Concrete Construction, Creston, IA, retiring from owning a business he worked with Estle & DeLong, Norris Asphalt and ending his construction life as a partner with his wife at Heidebrink Construction, Ottumwa, IA. He moved to Sun City, AZ where he worked at the Recreation Centers of Sun City until total retirement and finally after enjoying the time golfing, bowling and lawn bowling, he moved back to Ottumwa.
Virgil served as a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Spirit Parish in Creston, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, the ABC 700 Bowling Club and volunteered as a Boy Scout Weeble Leader. Virgil enjoyed having a hole in one twice when golfing, he also spent time in his life with soft ball, hunting, fishing, archery, mini golf and traveling. He enjoyed meeting people. His family was treasured by him. He struggled later in life with a stroke, heart congestion and macular degeneration, making his life more difficult, but with God’s help he never complained.
Surviving is his wife, Amy; daughter Patricia “Patti” Marie Barry, Thomas Jon (Michelle) Heidebrink both of Oskaloosa; daughter-in-law, Jarita Heidebrink of Ottumwa; grandchildren, Jeffrey Thomas Heidebrink of Chicago, IL, Spencer Beard and Laney Michelle Heidebrink, of Oskaloosa, Mason Douglas Heidebrink of Ottumwa, Ericka Marie Pullen (Tyler Dell’Isola) of Tempe, AZ; great-granddaughters, Reyd Marie Pullen and Ridley Tyler Dell’Isola of Tempe, AZ; his sisters, Ruth (Frank) Perrin of Amarillo, TX, Lois (Tom) Anderson of Windom, MN; brothers, Fritz Heidebrink of Bigelow, MN, Harm (Harriette) Heidebrink Jr. of Buffalo, MN, Leo (Thelma) of Worthington, MN and Duane (Marilyn) of Madrid, IA; sisters-in-law, Shirley Heidebrink of Worthington, MN, Rita Heidebrink of Sacred Heart, MN; 42 nieces and nephews, many great and great-great-nieces and nephews; Amy’s siblings, Lucille, Phyl, Elaine, Ken, Stan, Wayne and spouses.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Douglas Duane Heidebrink; sons-in-law, Jim Hatcher and Rich Barry; sister, Melvina Thompson, brothers, Jacob (Ardis) Heidebrink, Lawrence Heidebrink, George Heidebrink and Robert Heidebrink; sister-in-law, Leona Heidebrink; nephew, Todd Heidebrink; niece, Stacy Anderson; great-niece and great-nephew, Krista and Leo Craig Grimmius; Amy’s siblings Jeanette, Ralph, Melvin, Francis and Cindy; nephew and nieces, Gary, Kathy, Autumn, Amber, Melissa, Stephanie and Tiphanie.
Visitation is open at 10 a.m. Friday, May 29th, at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service with the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be 3 p.m. Friday, followed by family visitation until 6 p.m. Friday.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30th, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa. Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 1st in Calvary Cemetery in Creston, IA.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Parish, American Heart Association or to the family.
