
Fairfield and Sigourney both competed at the Ekstrand Relays at WACO Thursday, April 30th, with the Fairfield girls placing fifth in Class A and the boys third, while Sigourney’s girls finished fourth and the boys placed a strong second in Class B — just five points behind winner WACO.
Girls Team Standings
Washington won the Class A girls title with 192 points, followed by Mediapolis with 135, Fort Madison with 93, Keokuk with 77, and Fairfield with 65.
In Class B, WACO won with 139 points, followed by Highland with 134, Danville with 88, Sigourney with 80, Lone Tree with 52, New London with 36, and Winfield-Mt. Union with 27.
Boys Team Standings
Washington won the Class A boys title with 152 points, followed by Mediapolis with 138.5, Fairfield with 121.5, Fort Madison with 76, Keokuk with 72, and Central Lee with 29.
In Class B, WACO edged Sigourney 125-120, with Danville third at 96, Winfield-Mt. Union fourth at 82, New London fifth at 68, and Highland sixth at 54.
Fairfield Girls
Fairfield’s girls put together one of their stronger team performances of the season, scoring 65 points to place fifth in Class A — a result head coach Jerrod Belzer described as one of their best of the year.
Iris Lane had a strong individual night, placing second in the 100-meter dash in 13.54, just seven hundredths behind winner Alaya Carr of Keokuk at 13.47, with Ryelan Schnoebelen seventh in 15.34. Schnoebelen placed sixth in the 200-meter dash in 31.68 and Aubrey Ryan seventh in 34.00.
Caroline Van Pelt was a workhorse on the evening, contributing a strong leg in the 4×800 before returning to place fifth in the open 800-meter run in 2:46.28 behind winner Iris Dahl of Washington at 2:20.87, with Fatima Baez eighth in 3:11.99. In the distance events, Alex Jo Steward placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:54.21 and Bailey Belzer sixth in 6:00.07, behind winner Bryn Wright of Mediapolis at 5:10.08.
Aislinn Wise placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 21.98 and Olivia Manning ninth in 24.14, behind winner Leighton Messinger of Washington at 16.54. Kate Brecount placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:26.00, behind winner Messinger at 1:07.87.
The sprint corps had a strong night in the relays, with the 4×100 team of Lauren Martin, Maddy Martin, Iris Lane, and Allie Hammes placing second in 53.95 behind winner Washington at 50.32, and the 4×200 crew of Lauren Martin, Maddy Martin, Allie Hammes, and Kensley Fligg also placing second in 1:58.74 behind winner Washington at 1:54.78 — both second-best times on the season according to Belzer. The sprint medley squad of Lauren Martin, Maddy Martin, Iris Lane, and Kensley Fligg placed fourth in 2:06.50 behind winner Washington at 1:57.86. The 4×800 unit of Caroline Van Pelt, Alex Jo Steward, Bailey Belzer, and Kate Brecount placed third in 11:25.71 behind winner Fort Madison at 10:26.43, running a 20-second season-best time. The distance medley group of Olivia Manning, Aislinn Wise, Aubrey Ryan, and Fatima Baez placed fifth in 5:37.29 behind winner Mediapolis at 4:29.56.
In the field events, Elyse Setterstrom had a productive night, placing second in the shot put at 31-09.50 behind winner Kiera Stewart of Keokuk at 34-00, and third in the discus at 101-09 behind winner Payton Harris of Mediapolis at 116-09. Nora McReynolds placed sixth in the shot put at 28-04.75 and eighth in the discus at 63-00. Allie Hammes placed fourth in the long jump at 14-08 and Kensley Fligg seventh at 13-06, behind winner Jaslyn Villa of Washington at 15-06.50. Kate Brecount placed fourth in the high jump clearing 4-04 behind co-winners Kylee Hoard of Keokuk and Avery Crear of Mediapolis, both clearing 4-10.
“All around, it was a solid night for us. Sixty-five team points is one of our best performances this season,” Belzer said. “Maddy Martin, Lauren Martin, Iris Lane, and Allie Hammes all had big nights in the sprints and sprint relays. Our 4×100 and 4×200 all had their second-best times of the year. The 4×800 squad had a great race as well — they ran a 20-second season’s best time. Caroline Van Pelt had a great leg for us in that and then came back and had a good race in the open 800 as well. We have some stuff to clean up before conference next week but we love the effort and are excited for the challenge next Thursday.”
Sigourney Girls
Sigourney placed fourth in the Class B girls standings with 80 points, with Addison Yates and Izzy Heisdorffer providing the team’s individual highlights on a night that featured several strong performances across multiple events.
Yates won the 3,000-meter run in 11:22.88, pulling away from the field with Grace Bombei of Highland a distant second at 12:48.61. Heisdorffer claimed the 400-meter dash title in 1:11.62, edging Ella Schlabaugh of Highland by just over one second, with Ella Bahlmann fifth in 1:16.19.
Bella de Oliveira placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.67 behind winner Ava Christofferson of Lone Tree at 13.17, and Kiley Cavin 10th in 15.87. de Oliveira also placed third in the 200-meter dash in 28.69 behind Christofferson at 27.13, and Cavin eighth in 32.69. Cloee Wilson placed sixth in the 800-meter run in 3:04.71 behind winner Alaina Gourley of Danville at 2:21.25, and Bahlmann eighth in 3:09.52. Wilson also placed eighth in the 1,500-meter run in 6:42.33 behind winner Macie Carter of WACO at 5:24.45.
Kinsley Clubb placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 20.78 behind winner Bren Graber of WACO at 17.10. Brynn Clarahan placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:16.18 behind winner Allison Gillip of New London at 1:12.85. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Kia Montgomery, Kinsley Clubb, Amelia Phillips, and Abby Davis placed fourth in 1:23.04 behind winner WACO at 1:16.27.
The sprint medley team of Carmalita Cave, Bella de Oliveira, Kia Montgomery, and Brynn Clarahan placed second in 2:03.55 behind winner Danville at 1:54.66, and the distance medley squad of Abyl McCulley, Kinsley Clubb, Brynn Clarahan, and Addison Yates placed third in 5:02.04 behind winner WACO at 4:27.87. The 4×100 group of Carmalita Cave, Bella de Oliveira, Abyl McCulley, and Kia Montgomery placed fifth in 54.69 behind winner Highland at 51.68. The 4×200 team of Carmalita Cave, Kiley Cavin, Abby Davis, and Abyl McCulley placed fifth in 2:04.91 behind winner Highland at 1:50.76. The 4×400 crew of Kinsley Clubb, Izzy Heisdorffer, Amelia Phillips, and Brynn Clarahan placed fourth in 4:51.81 behind winner WACO at 4:18.49.
Izzy Heisdorffer placed second in the shot put at 29-10.50 behind winner Chloe Sexton of Highland at 33-10, and Collyns O’Rourke fourth at 26-02.50. Ashtyn Tish placed sixth in the discus at 68-06 and Emerie McCulley ninth at 65-10, behind winner Abby Waterhouse of WACO at 89-02.50.
Fairfield Boys
Fairfield’s boys placed third in Class A with 121.5 points in what was a well-rounded team effort, with the sprint duo of Ethan Bisgard and Dayson Workman leading the charge and the relay squads delivering a string of runner-up finishes throughout the night.
Workman won the 100-meter dash in 11.53, edging Eli Wulf of Washington by seven hundredths, with Voss Richardson third in 11.94. Bisgard won the 400-meter dash in 52.00 — just one hundredth ahead of Nathan Schmidgall of Mediapolis — with Jacob Crew fifth in 57.15. Bisgard also won the 200-meter dash in 23.14, with the next finisher, Jadyn Burton of Keokuk, more than a second and a half back at 24.65. Eli Zillman won the long jump at 21-00, ten inches ahead of runner-up Truett Larson of Mediapolis at 20-02, and placed second in the high jump clearing 6-00 alongside Fort Madison’s Nolan Guzman, behind winner Lathan Keller of Mediapolis at 6-02. The 4×100 relay team of Dayson Workman, Voss Richardson, Ethan Bisgard, and Eli Hoffman claimed an event win in 44.38, edging Keokuk’s second-place 45.20.
John Miller placed sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:07.33 and Parker Reid seventh in 2:08.18, behind winner Nolan Guzman of Fort Madison at 2:00.09. Brice Boatright placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:12.96 and Clae Cass seventh in 5:16.29, behind winner Simon Wendel of Mediapolis at 4:27.52. Elijah Hamilton placed sixth in the 3,200-meter run in 11:26.87 and Jordan Miller eighth in 12:12.48, behind winner Wendel at 9:42.31.
Blake Burnett placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.38 behind winner Caden Greiner of Washington at 17.30. Elijah Hamilton placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.80 and Maddox Rebling ninth in 1:07.35, behind winner Liam McEntee of Fort Madison at 59.57.
Fairfield was a consistent presence near the top of the leaderboard in the relays, collecting five runner-up finishes across the evening. The sprint medley foursome of Dayson Workman, Voss Richardson, Ethan Bisgard, and Eli Hoffman placed second in 1:40.36, just over one second behind winner Keokuk at 1:39.20, and the same core group returned to claim second in the 4×200 in 1:34.79 behind winner Mediapolis at 1:32.72. The 4×400 team of Jacob Crew, Brock Atwood, Parker Reid, and John Miller also placed second in 3:41.78 behind winner Mediapolis at 3:28.43, as did the shuttle hurdle relay group of Blake Burnett, Jacob Crew, Tucker Robertson, and Eli Zillman in 1:07.21 — just over half a second behind winner Washington at 1:06.66. The 4×800 unit of Parker Reid, Brice Boatright, Clae Cass, and John Miller rounded out the runner-up finishes with an 8:45.08 effort behind winner Washington at 8:24.74. The distance medley squad of Grant Bisgard, Brady Wigle, Brock Atwood, and River Fulton added a third-place finish in 4:00.52 behind winner Mediapolis at 3:38.68.
Blake Burnett placed fifth in the high jump clearing 5-10. Brady Wigle placed fourth in the long jump at 18-07.50. Aiden Mizelle placed sixth in the discus at 115-05 and Clayton Greiner ninth at 106-09.50, behind winner Greyson Hartman of Washington at 172-05.50. William Bryant placed seventh in the shot put at 36-04.75 and Broz Bowman eighth at 34-06.50, behind winner Hartman at 63-01.
“The sprint crew had a solid night, led by Ethan Bisgard and Dayson Workman. We made a lot of nice progress as a team,” head coach Brian Dunlap said.
Sigourney Boys
Sigourney placed second in the Class B boys standings with 120 points, falling just five short of winner WACO in what was one of the program’s stronger outings of the season. Troy Klett and Aiden Knepper were again among the top individual performers, and the Savages showed depth across nearly every event category.
Troy Klett won the 1,600-meter run in 4:38.16 — more than 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Garrett Landau of WACO at 4:51.00 — and the 3,200-meter run in 10:27.99, with Cole Klett second at 11:11.59, giving Sigourney a one-two finish in the event. Knepper placed second in the long jump at 20-02.75, just three inches behind winner Hayden Shelman of WACO at 20-05.75. Graham Moore placed second in the shot put at 42-01, falling just 10.50 inches short of winner Colin Anderson of Winfield-Mt. Union at 42-11.50.
Lance Walden placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.30 behind winner Shelman at 11.55, and Aidyn Parker eighth in 14.14. Walden placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in 25.99 behind winner Shelman at 24.03, and Hunter Sellers eighth in 26.77. Isaac Jones placed seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.46 and Jordan Anderson eighth in 1:01.03, behind winner Brandon Franklin of Danville at 56.30.
Troy Klett placed third in the 800-meter run in 2:06.72 behind winner Jude Dykstra of WACO at 2:01.25, with Levi Myers fifth in 2:14.96. Cole Klett placed fourth in the 1,600 at 5:03.98.
Brayden Wood placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.48 behind winner Ty Frazier of Danville at 58.33.
The Savages were productive in the relays, with several squads finishing in the top four. The sprint medley group of Carson O’Rourke, Carson Davis, Lance Walden, and Brayden Wood placed second in 1:45.01 behind winner Danville at 1:37.83. The distance medley team of Carson O’Rourke, Aiden Knepper, Brayden Wood, and Troy Klett placed third in 3:48.66 behind winner WACO at 3:42.43, as did the 4×800 unit of Levi Myers, Jordan Anderson, Isaac Jones, and Brentley Weldon Kyle in 9:29.43 behind winner WACO at 8:20.88. The 4×100 team of Carson O’Rourke, Aiden Knepper, Carson Davis, and Lance Walden placed third in 47.24 behind winner New London at 42.94. The 4×200 squad of Carson Davis, Levi Jaeger, Graham Moore, and Lance Walden placed fourth in 1:44.98 behind winner Highland at 1:39.34, and the 4×400 crew of Levi Myers, Jordan Anderson, Isaac Jones, and Brentley Weldon Kyle placed fourth in 3:55.40 behind winner Danville at 3:39.34.
