A bridge replacement project will require a full closure of Iowa 78 west of Richland beginning Tuesday, May 26th, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Fairfield construction office.

The closure affects Iowa 78 between County Road V-63 in Keokuk County and Iowa 1, at a point approximately 3.4 miles west of Iowa 1. The road is expected to remain closed until September 11th, 2026, weather permitting. The closure begins at 8:00 a.m. on May 26th.

During the closure, motorists will follow a marked detour route using County Road V-63 in Keokuk and Jefferson counties, Jefferson County Road H-17, and Iowa 1.

The Iowa DOT reminds drivers to use caution in and around the work zone, obey posted speed limits, and stay alert. Traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. Drivers should allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts at all times.
