An Ottumwa woman is facing a serious misdemeanor charge after authorities say a disagreement involving a juvenile escalated into a physical altercation that left another woman injured.

On May 16 at approximately 12:46 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department was dispatched to the 600 block of Hancock Street for a reported assault.

According to a criminal complaint, 33-year-old Shanae Crumes of Ottumwa had her juvenile son with her in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Court documents state Crumes allegedly attempted to enter a vehicle without the victim’s permission to address issues involving her son not listening to her. The victim, who was accompanied by the juvenile’s father and was reportedly in a domestic relationship with him, attempted to stop Crumes from entering the vehicle.

Authorities allege Crumes then punched the victim in the face, causing an injury to the victim’s lip. Court records state the incident escalated from a parenting and juvenile discipline matter into a physical altercation that resulted in injury.

Crumes was transported to the Wapello County Jail and was later released after posting bond.

She is charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness, a serious misdemeanor.
