Those looking for a unique October experience can explore the darker side of medical history during Medicine, Mystery & the Macabre, an after-dark walking tour through historic downtown Pulaski.
The approximately 60-minute guided tour will take participants through a fascinating collection of stories involving bizarre medical remedies, outdated treatments, unusual beliefs about the human body, mysterious deaths, folklore and superstition.
Rather than focusing on traditional ghost stories or local history alone, the tour explores strange and sometimes unsettling medical practices from different places and periods throughout history. Participants will learn about the ways people once understood illness, attempted to heal the body and explained death before modern medical knowledge.
The experience combines true historical accounts, unusual medical practices, eerie stories and folklore, with a few surprises along the way. Organizers describe the tour as fascinating, slightly creepy and entertaining rather than intensely frightening.
The walking tour is recommended for ages 12 and older due to mature historical themes involving illness, death, medical procedures and human anatomy. Parents should use their discretion when deciding whether younger guests should attend.
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Since the tour takes place outdoors after dark, bringing a light jacket may also be helpful.
Guests will meet on the sidewalk near Common John’s in downtown Pulaski. Participants are asked to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before their scheduled tour time to check in and ensure the tour begins promptly.
Multiple dates are available throughout October. Interested participants should check the event’s ticket listing for available dates, times and admission information.
