The Fairfield Trojans girls golf team finished second at the Southeast Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 13th at the Washington Golf and Country Club, carding a team score of 406 over 18 holes on a par-72 course.
Washington claimed the conference title with a score of 371. Fairfield finished runner-up at 406, followed by Burlington at 417, Fort Madison at 418, Mount Pleasant at 422, and Keokuk at 425.
Washington’s Adalyn Long took individual medalist honors with an 85. Ella Bentler led Fairfield with a runner-up finish at 91, tying with Washington’s Elizabeth Hora for second. Keokuk’s Carrigan Morris finished fourth at 92.
Also for Fairfield, Aries Wagner carded a 102 to finish 11th, Kylie Felt shot a 106 to finish 13th, and Vanessa Kessel added a 107 for 14th place. Janell Ferguson finished 27th at 127 and Kate Brecount rounded out the Fairfield scorecard in 28th with a 131.
Bentler and Kessel each earned All-Conference honors for their performances.
Head coach Makenzie Champ was pleased with how her team performed on a challenging course to close out the conference season.
“The girls played well,” Champ said. “Aries and Kylie both had great rounds, as well as Ella. Vanessa locked in at the end to solidify our team win. The course was beautiful and it was a good end to our conference season.”
The Fairfield girls now turns their attention to the Class 3A Regional Tournament, set for Wednesday, May 20th at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa. The Trojans will face a large and competitive field that includes Ballard, Bondurant-Farrar, Carlisle, Grinnell, Knoxville, Lisbon, Mount Pleasant, Nevada, Oskaloosa, Pella, and Cedar Rapids Xavier, with top finishers earning a trip to the state tournament.
