Betty Ann Phillips Mickles, age 76, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on February 6, 1950 near Farson, Iowa, the daughter of Carl E. and Margaret (Witt) Phillips. She attended Eddyville-Blakesburg High School, graduating with the Class of 1968. On June 2, 1968, she was united in marriage to Richard Sherman. They later divorced. On June 13, 1975, she was united in marriage to Charles A. Mickles in Oskaloosa.
Betty worked at Pella Corp until her marriage to Charles. After her marriage, she was a homemaker, raising her family and taking care of her home. After Charles passed in 1999, she went to work for Dollar General. She enjoyed being a mom and grandmother, listening to her radio, singing, playing cards with her family and sitting outdoors during the evening. Betty also enjoyed collecting lighthouses. Betty accepted everyone as they were and many called her “Grandma Betty”
She is survived by 21 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a sister, Marcia Harris of Bettendorf, Iowa, a sister, Janet Teggatz of Oskaloosa as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a daughter, Tammy Ann Curtis of Lovilia, Iowa.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Phillips; husband, Charles Mickles; her children, Randy Dean Mickles, Jodie Lynn Stewart Mickles, Todd Charles Mickles and Raymond George Mickles.
As was her wish, cremation will take place and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family.
