A recent domestic abuse incident in Eddyville has led to serious criminal charges. Authorities responded to a report of an assault.

On April 1st, around 10:22 PM, the Wapello County Sheriff Department responded to a domestic abuse report at the 700 block of Mill Street in Eddyville.

Upon arrival, authorities found Shawn Abernathy, 52, of Eddyville, who allegedly wrapped both hands around the victim’s neck and squeezed without justification. According to court documents, the victim reported difficulty breathing during the incident. Law enforcement noted a visible red scratch mark on the right side of her neck, consistent with Abernathy’s actions.

Court records indicate that Abernathy’s actions were intended to cause serious pain and did indeed inflict bodily injury. The couple had been in a relationship for approximately seven years and had lived together for about five or six years.

Following the incident, a no-contact order was issued on April 2nd. A warrant was subsequently served on April 16th. Abernathy waived his preliminary hearing and was detained in the Wapello County Jail. He was later released on a $2,000 cash/surety bond.

Abernathy is facing charges of domestic abuse assault with intent to impede the airflow of air and blood, classified as an aggravated misdemeanor, along with willful injury causing bodily injury, classified as a Class D felony.
