Residents Advised to Guard Against “Asphalt Scammers”

Local residents are being warned of “asphalt scammers” who are offering to pave driveways and sidewalks at a discounted cost.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird’s Office says in many reported scams, there are solicitors that go door-to-door, arriving at a residence unannounced to aggressively offer a “special discount” due to what they claim is leftover asphalt from another job. The office notes the scammers often drive trucks with out of state license plates without company signage on any vehicles. The work is typically substandard or no work is done.

In a Facebook post, former Davis County Sheriff Dave Davis said solicitors recently stopped by his home in Bloomfield.

The Attorney General’s office says if anyone has concerns about the legitimacy of door-to-door solicitors, turn them away, write down the license plate and description of the vehicles, and if possible, contact law enforcement.

Bird’s office advices residents to thoroughly vet potential scammers by asking for written estimates, requesting licenses and permits, and making sure the contractor is bonded. Additionally, people should never pay until work is completed, limit what you pay up front, don’t pay in cash, and get a receipt for the payment.
