A Mahaska County investigation has led to multiple charges following a reported vehicle break-in and altercation at the county jail.
On April 16 at approximately 5:08 p.m., the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 200 block of Reid Street in Leighton for a reported burglary. According to criminal complaints, 18-year-old Chloe Markwick of Leighton allegedly entered a vehicle parked on the street without the owner’s permission or knowledge.
Authorities say Markwick used tools in her possession to remove the cover around the steering wheel and attempted to start the vehicle. During the attempt, she reportedly damaged the ignition system, leaving the vehicle inoperable. Court documents further state that she opened the hood and attempted to add oil to the engine when it would not start.
Upon her arrival at the Mahaska County Jail, officials report that a search of her belongings uncovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside a backpack. During the booking process, Markwick allegedly became agitated and uncooperative and was placed in a cell to calm down.
Later, jail staff say Markwick requested to use the restroom. When the cell door was opened, she allegedly pushed past staff, became physically resistant, and sat on the floor, refusing to comply. As staff attempted to assist her, Markwick reportedly bit a staff member on the right forearm, leaving visible teeth marks and causing pain.
Markwick is currently being held in the Mahaska County Jail on a $5,000 cash-only bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 27.
She faces charges of assault on persons in certain occupations causing bodily injury, a Class D felony; possession of burglary tools, an aggravated misdemeanor; and possession of a controlled substance (marijuana), first offense, a serious misdemeanor.
