The Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, in partnership with Iowa Select Farms, is shining a spotlight on Iowa’s military-connected youth by honoring 1,480 children with special “Proud Military Kid” T-shirts. The effort is part of the Foundation’s Henry’s Heroes program, an initiative that continues to evolve each year to support and celebrate young people across the state.
This year’s program places a special focus on Iowa’s military families, recognizing the unique experiences of children who grow up with a parent or loved one serving in the armed forces. Foundation representatives say the goal is to show appreciation and bring awareness to the important role these children play in supporting their families.
April, recognized nationwide as Month of the Military Child, serves as a time to honor the resilience and strength of military-connected youth. Throughout the month, communities across the country take time to recognize the sacrifices and contributions these children make every day.
A key part of the celebration is Purple Up! Day, when people wear purple to show support for military children from all branches of service. This year, Purple Up! Day will be observed on Friday, April 10, encouraging communities to come together in appreciation.
Officials with the Iowa National Guard note that military children often demonstrate remarkable strength, adaptability, and understanding as they navigate the challenges of military life. Recognizing their contributions, they say, helps ensure these young people feel valued and supported.
The Henry’s Heroes initiative is just one of several ways the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation gives back to Iowa’s military community. Other efforts include Pork for Patriots, which supports Veterans Day events, the My Veteran Hero program that honors veterans with custom hats, and the Pork Care Package program, which distributes thousands of food coupons to active-duty military members across the state each year.
