A fatal shooting early Tuesday morning is under investigation in Ottumwa after a man died from injuries sustained in the incident.
According to authorities, officers with the Ottumwa Police Department were dispatched around 5:35 a.m. to a residence in the 300 block of Evergreen Street following a 911 call reporting a shooting. When officers arrived, they located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Jeremy Ray Showalter of Ottumwa, was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.
Additional support was requested from the Iowa Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal Investigation, whose agents and crime scene technicians assisted in processing evidence. Tactical officers with the Iowa State Patrol also responded to aid in locating a suspect.
Later that afternoon, at approximately 4:22 p.m., authorities arrested 24-year-old Michael Joe Johnson of Sigourney in connection with the case. He has been charged with First-Degree Murder, a Class “A” felony, and First-Degree Burglary, a Class “B” felony.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing. However, they noted there is no ongoing threat to the public. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Ottumwa Police Department.
