Fairfield Girls Track Place Ninth at Washington Girls’ Invitational; Boys Tie for 11th at EBF

The Fairfield girls and boys track and field teams both competed Thursday, April 23rd, with the girls traveling to Washington for the 50th Annual Washington Girls’ Invitational and the boys heading to EBF for a 13-team meet.

Fairfield Girls at Washington

Benton won the team title with 100 points, followed by Lisbon with 77, Fort Madison with 76, Iowa City High with 74, Mediapolis with 70, Tipton with 64, Mount Pleasant with 56, Washington with 34, Fairfield with 26, and Davenport West with 12.

Charley Huebner of Fort Madison won the 100-meter dash in 13.09. Iris Lane placed second for Fairfield in 13.33 — a personal record for the senior — with Aislinn Wise 25th in 15.41, Olivia Manning 26th in 15.58, and Laney Bowers 32nd in 16.98. In the 200-meter dash, Tenley Hinderaker of Tipton won in 27.59, with Lane turning in another strong performance, placing third in 28.04, Aubrey Ryan 27th in 33.50, and Manning 29th in 33.92.Sophia Seeck of Benton swept the hurdle events, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.52 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.48. Aislinn Wise placed 18th in the 100-meter hurdles in 21.16. Kate Brecount placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:23.58.

Avery Rump of Fort Madison won the 3,000-meter run in 10:20.06, setting a new meet record. Caroline Van Pelt placed ninth for Fairfield in 13:06.99. In the 1,500-meter run, Avery Dietz of Mediapolis won in 5:06.82. Alex Jo Steward placed seventh for Fairfield in 5:51.62, Van Pelt eighth in 6:00.24, Bailey Belzer ninth in 6:00.30 — a 20-second personal record for the senior — and Fatima Baez 19th in 6:45.03.

The 4×100 squad of Lauren Martin, Allie Hammes, Iris Lane, and Maddy Martin placed fifth in 54.55 behind winner Lisbon at 52.68. The 4×200 group of Lauren Martin, Allie Hammes, Maddy Martin, and Kensley Fligg placed 11th in 2:00.43 behind winner Benton at 1:49.87. The sprint medley team of Lauren Martin, Allie Hammes, Maddy Martin, and Iris Lane placed seventh in 2:03.30 behind winner Lisbon at 1:57.27. The 4×800 team of Kensley Fligg, Alex Jo Steward, Bailey Belzer, and Fatima Baez placed seventh in 12:02.47 behind winner Iowa City High at 10:16.29.

Elyse Setterstrom placed second in the discus at 107-09.50 behind winner Payton Harris of Mediapolis at 123-10.50, with Nora McReynolds 25th at 60-10. Setterstrom also placed fifth in the shot put at 33-03.50 — a personal record — and McReynolds 11th at 27-06.50 behind winner Ella Ensminger of Mount Pleasant at 36-05.

Head coach Jerrod Belzer was pleased with several senior performances. “Good night for some of our seniors,” Belzer said. “Iris Lane looked great in the 100 and 200, running a nice PR in the 100. Bailey Belzer had a huge 20-second PR in the 1,500 and Elyse Setterstrom threw a shot put PR as well.”

Fairfield Boys at EBF

Knoxville won the boys team title with 128 points, followed by Williamsburg with 116, Iowa Valley with 112, English Valleys with 111, Cardinal with 109.5, Mount Pleasant with 97, North Mahaska with 90, Sigourney with 82, EBF with 81, BGM with 72.5, Davis County and Fairfield tied with 68, and Mediapolis with 57.

In Class A results, Kyler Gifford of Knoxville swept the sprints, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.35 and the 200-meter dash in 23.22. Brady Wigle placed 10th for Fairfield in the 100-meter dash in 12.62, Jaxon Coleman 11th in 12.72, and Aiden Mizelle 18th in 13.09. Coleman placed 14th in the 200-meter dash in 26.00 and Angel Quimby 17th in 30.55. Jackson Reed of Knoxville won the 400-meter dash in 51.08, with Sam Nelson placing 10th for Fairfield in 1:00.42 and Quimby 14th in 1:05.01.

Karsen Caster of Knoxville swept the hurdle events, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 15.85 and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.23. Sawyer McCready placed ninth for Fairfield in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.39. Elijah Hamilton placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.36 and Maddox Rebling 11th in 1:07.06.

John Miller placed third in the 800-meter run in 2:09.19 and Parker Reid fourth in 2:12.25 behind winner Will Schmidgall of Mediapolis at 2:02.75. Miller also placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 11:44.49 and Jordan Miller fifth in 12:30.19 behind winner Marcus Pirkl of Williamsburg at 10:55.96.

Fairfield had a strong showing in the relay events despite not capturing gold. The 4×200 squad of Eli Hoffman, Spencer McCready, Dayson Workman, and Ethan Bisgard placed second in 1:32.89, just behind Williamsburg’s winning 1:31.50. The 4×800 group of Parker Reid, River Fulton, Clae Cass, and Elijah Hamilton placed third in 8:58.39 behind winner Davis County at 8:35.66. The sprint medley team of Dayson Workman, Voss Richardson, Eli Hoffman, and Ethan Bisgard placed second in 1:38.53 — just one hundredth of a second behind winner Davis County at 1:38.52, one of the closest finishes of the night. The distance medley crew of Tucker Robertson, Grant Bisgard, Jacob Crew, and Brice Boatright placed second in 4:01.65 behind winner Davis County at 3:58.17.

Brady Wigle placed fourth in the long jump at 19-08.25 and Eli Hoffman sixth at 18-08.50 behind winner Emmett Holohan of EBF at 21-08. Eli Aplara placed seventh in the high jump clearing 5-02 behind winner Kayle Brown of Mount Pleasant at 6-01 as Fairfield’s Eli Zillman was high jumping at the Drake Relays. Aiden Mizelle placed eighth in the shot put at 36-00, Broz Bowman 17th at 33-03, and Clayton Greiner 21st at 30-02.50 behind winner Dylan Weisskopf of Williamsburg at 46-05.50. Mizelle also placed eighth in the discus at 116-03, Greiner 11th at 105-02, and Bowman 21st at 84-07 behind winner Aiden Batey of Williamsburg at 138-03.
