The Fairfield boys tennis team picked up two crucial Southeast Conference victories this week, defeating Burlington 5-4 on Tuesday and knocking off previously undefeated Mount Pleasant 5-4 on Thursday to improve to 5-2 overall and in conference play.
Tuesday, April 28th — at Burlington
Rescheduled from Monday, the Trojans needed every point they could get in Burlington, eventually pulling out a 5-4 victory to keep pace in the conference race.
Fairfield swept the first three singles matches to jump out to a commanding lead. Bowen Zhang won at No. 1 singles over Patrick Morgan 6-4, 6-1. Max Craver rallied at No. 2 against Avery Cameron after dropping the first set, winning 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 in a comeback that drew praise from head coach Lawrence Eyre. Pranit Ruia was dominant at No. 3 against Ian Hanks, winning 6-2, 6-0.
The lead tightened after that, however, as Aaron Carlson fell to Cole Livingston at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-3, and Caelan Chang dropped a hard-fought three-setter to Detayvion Pearson at No. 5, losing 5-7, 6-4, 13-11. Yangyi Zhong steadied the ship against Cameron Anderson at No. 6, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 win to give Fairfield a 4-2 advantage heading into doubles.
The Trojans needed just one doubles win to secure the match, and it was Craver and Ruia who delivered, winning the No. 2 doubles matchup over Livingston and Pearson 8-2. The No. 1 doubles team of Zhang and Chang fell to Patrick Morgan and Avery Cameron 8-2, and the No. 3 team of Zhong and Carlson dropped an 8-6 decision to Anderson and Taylor.
Eyre praised his team’s resilience after the match. “Max completely turned his match around after a rough start — an impressive comeback,” he said. “Bowen and Yang played excellent singles in their straight sets wins.”
With the win, Fairfield improved to 4-2 overall and in conference play, extending their winning streak to three matches. Burlington fell to 4-3 overall and in conference play after having won two straight over Keokuk and Fort Madison.
Thursday, April 30th — vs. Mount Pleasant
With Mount Pleasant entering the match at 7-0 and holding a firm grip on first place in the SEC, Fairfield came out with a point to prove — and delivered one of the most significant wins of the season, handing the Panthers their first loss with a 5-4 victory.
Fairfield took control in the singles matches, winning four of the six matchups. Bowen Zhang won at No. 1 over Sawyer Fulton 8-4, Pranit Ruia won at No. 3 over Grayson Walker 8-3, Caelan Chang won at No. 5 over Carter Gehling 8-2, and Yangyi Zhong closed out singles with an 8-4 win over Matthew Del Valle at No. 6.
Mount Pleasant’s Max Heater defeated Craver 8-2 at No. 2, and Charlie Syfert beat Carlson 8-3 at No. 4. Holding a 4-2 singles lead, Fairfield needed just one win in doubles to secure the match, just like their previous match against Burlington.
In a scene that felt like déjà vu from Tuesday’s win at Burlington, it was again the No. 2 doubles team that delivered the clinching point — this time Ruia and Chang stepping up to win 8-2 over Walker and Gehling and seal the victory for Fairfield. The No. 1 doubles team of Zhang and Craver fell to Fulton and Heater 8-5, and the No. 3 duo of Carlson and Zhong dropped an 8-1 decision to Syfert and Del Valle.
The victory was sweet revenge for the Trojans, who had lost to the Panthers 5-4 on April 13th. Eyre credited his team’s growth since that earlier defeat. “We had nowhere to go but up in doubles after getting swept three weeks ago,” he said. “Our No. 2 team supported each other through some tough moments mid-match and played with coherent energy down the stretch.” He also praised individual performances throughout the lineup. “Bowen played an excellent singles match today — measured, steady play at a high level throughout. Our guys committed themselves to improvement after our loss to Mount Pleasant, and it showed.”
With the win, Fairfield wins four straight and improves to 5-2 overall and in conference play, remaining in second place. Mount Pleasant dropped to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play but still holds first place, as Fairfield’s early-season loss to Fort Madison remains a factor in the standings. The path to a share of the conference title remains open for Fairfield, but it will require some help — Mount Pleasant faces Burlington on May 4th, meaning the Trojans will need the Grayhounds to pull off an upset if they want to share the crown. First, though, Fairfield will need to take care of their own business, traveling to Keokuk on May 4th to close out the regular season.
The Trojans will then host the conference tournament on May 7th and the IHSAA 1A District Singles and Doubles Tournament on May 16th, with Assumption, Central DeWitt, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Marion, Mount Pleasant, and South Tama all in the field trying to advance to the state tournament.
