Fairfield Boys Finish Third at Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa; Girls Take Seventh

The Fairfield boys and girls track and field teams competed Tuesday, April 21st at the Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa, with the boys finishing third in an eight-team field and the girls placing seventh in a competitive field that included several large-school programs.

Team Standings

On the girls side, Waukee Northwest won with 214 points, followed by Iowa City West with 130, Ottumwa with 107, Burlington with 54, Wayne with 30, Pella with 28, and Fairfield and Ottumwa JV tied with 9.

On the boys side, Newton won with 141 points, followed by Pella with 116, Fairfield with 100, Ottumwa with 85, Burlington with 75, Davis County with 67, Ottumwa JV with 3, and Wayne with 2.

Fairfield Girls Results

Fairfield did not claim any individual event victories on the girls side, competing against several large-school programs, but had several solid individual performances throughout the meet.

Mylee Stiefel of Burlington won the 100-meter dash in 12.18. Iris Lane placed ninth for Fairfield in 13.52 and Sam Lyons 14th in 13.81. In the 200-meter dash, Bella Distefano of Waukee Northwest won in 25.75, with Lane placing seventh in 28.35 and Lyons 10th in 28.78. Kate Brecount placed ninth in the 400-meter dash in 1:07.97 and Aubrey Ryan 14th in 1:18.32 behind winner Savannah Mathias of Iowa City West at 57.84. Jessa Abels of Waukee Northwest won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.75, with Aislinn Wise placing 11th for Fairfield in 20.40.

Caroline Van Pelt placed 10th in the 1,500-meter run in 5:36.57, Bailey Belzer 14th in 6:22.57, and Fatima Baez 15th in 6:58.00 behind winner Katelyn Pearson of Waukee Northwest at 5:00.50. Alex Jo Steward placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run in 14:15.38 behind winner Norah Kell of Waukee Northwest at 11:23.39.

The 4×100 squad of Lauren Martin, Allie Hammes, Iris Lane, and Ryelan Schnoebelen placed seventh in 55.93 behind winner Waukee Northwest at 49.36. The 4×200 group of Lauren Martin, Allie Hammes, Kensley Fligg, and Maddy Martin placed seventh in 1:58.15 behind Waukee Northwest’s winning 1:48.09. The 4×800 crew of Caroline Van Pelt, Kensley Fligg, Bailey Belzer, and Fatima Baez placed sixth in 12:12.74 behind Waukee Northwest’s winning 10:07.54. The sprint medley quartet of Maddy Martin, Allie Hammes, Ryelan Schnoebelen, and Lauren Martin placed eighth in 2:07.70.

Kylee Hill of Burlington had a dominant day in the throwing events, winning both the discus at 141-08 and the shot put at 51-01. Elyse Setterstrom placed fifth in the discus at 103-09 and Nora McReynolds 19th at 59-00. Setterstrom also placed fifth in the shot put at 32-06 and McReynolds 11th at 28-04. Allie Hammes placed eighth in the long jump at 14-10 behind winner Ella Whitney of Wayne at 17-05.50.

Fairfield Boys Results

Fairfield had a strong night on the boys side, winning three events. Eli Zillman won the high jump with a clearance of 6-06 and Blake Burnett followed him right up the podium with a second-place finish at 6-02, giving Fairfield a one-two sweep in the event. The 4×200 squad of Tucker Robertson, Voss Richardson, Dayson Workman, and Ethan Bisgard won in 1:33.31, edging Davis County’s second-place 1:34.29 in a close finish. The 4×800 crew of John Miller, Clae Cass, Brice Boatright, and Parker Reid won in 8:45.82, comfortably ahead of Davis County’s second-place 8:57.03.

Dayson Workman had a big night in the sprints, placing second in the 100-meter dash in 11.25 — just behind winner Tyson Roose of Pella at 11.05. Eli Hoffman placed third in the 200-meter dash in 23.22 and Burnett seventh in 24.13 behind winner Keshawn Wyldon of Burlington at 22.50. Angel Quimby placed 14th in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.74 behind winner Jonathan Miller of Ottumwa at 54.51.

Zillman placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.84 and Sawyer McCready eighth in 17.82 behind winner Drew Bauer of Newton at 15.41. Elijah Hamilton placed ninth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.36 behind winner Mark Fraise of Davis County at 55.83. The shuttle hurdle relay foursome of Blake Burnett, Jacob Crew, Tucker Robertson, and Eli Zillman placed third in 1:07.08 behind winner Burlington at 1:02.97.

The distance crew had a standout night, contributing heavily to the team’s point total. Parker Reid placed fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:07.95 and Clae Cass 11th in 2:21.67 behind winner Cooper Christy of Newton at 2:01.60. John Miller placed third in the 1,600-meter run in 5:03.44 and Brice Boatright fourth in 5:06.44 behind winner Lance Zaabel of Newton at 4:49.14. Elijah Hamilton placed third in the 3,200-meter run in 11:55.84 and Jordan Miller fifth in 13:08.17 behind winner Noah Schuknecht of Pella at 11:12.88.

Fairfield’s relay groups had a strong showing across the board. The 4×100 unit of Dayson Workman, Voss Richardson, Blake Burnett, and Eli Hoffman placed third in 45.46 behind winner Newton at 43.87. The 4×400 group of River Fulton, Jacob Crew, Tucker Robertson, and Ethan Bisgard placed third in 3:36.48 behind winner Davis County at 3:28.21. The sprint medley squad of Dayson Workman, Voss Richardson, Ethan Bisgard, and Eli Hoffman placed third in 1:37.45 behind winner Newton at 1:35.66. The distance medley crew of Jaxon Coleman, Aiden Holthus, Sam Nelson, and River Fulton placed fifth behind winner Newton at 3:44.42.

Zillman and Burnett bookended a strong field events performance with their high jump one-two finish. Brady Wigle placed eighth in the long jump at 17-02.50 behind winner Colt Koeppen of Pella at 20-04. William Bryant placed 11th in the shot put at 36-08, Clayton Greiner 19th at 31-10, and Aiden Mizelle 25th at 25-00 behind winner Nick Milburn of Newton at 57-01. Mizelle placed eighth in the discus at 112-02, Greiner 15th at 102-09, and Bryant 19th at 95-02 behind winner Jonathan Panknen of Pella at 146-01.

Head coach Brian Dunlap was pleased with how the squad performed across the board, particularly noting the distance runners and relay groups. “The distance crew had a really great night,” Dunlap said. “They scored a lot of team points by running a lot of PRs and season bests. We were strong in the relays tonight with a lot of season bests. Kids took advantage of the conditions and really had some nice results.”
