Fairfield’s boys and girls golf teams were both back in action on Thursday, April 9th, with the boys traveling to Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course in Fort Madison and the girls hosting at the Fairfield Golf and Country Club.

Boys Results

Fairfield’s boys finished second out of five teams with a score of 162 on the par-36 Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course. Washington won the team title with 149, while Mount Pleasant was third with 166, Fort Madison fourth with 181, and Keokuk fifth with 186.

Washington’s Rajan Roth continued his dominant early-season play, winning individual medalist honors with a remarkable 32, four under par. Drew Myers led Fairfield with a 37 and three birdies, a career-best performance. Archer Kreuter finished fifth with a 40, Luke Thornton placed 10th with a 41 that included a birdie, Dain Burkhart was 15th with a 44, Xavier Kessel 22nd with a 47, and Quinn Settles rounded out the lineup in 28th with a 57.

Head coach Mick Flattery was encouraged by the team’s performance. “I thought it went well,” Flattery said. “Terrific round by Washington and by Rajan Roth at minus four. Our guys shot their best score so far this year. Drew shot his career best. Really good balance again with some shots to clean up.”

Girls Results

The Fairfield girls hosted their first home meet of the season at the Fairfield Golf and Country Club, finishing fourth out of five scored teams with a 210 on the par-36 course. Mount Pleasant and Fort Madison tied for first with 194 each, Washington was third with 203, and Keokuk fifth with 212. Burlington participated but did not have enough players for a team score, posting 125.

Ella Bentler had a standout individual performance, shooting a 38 with one birdie — the best score of her career at the home course — to claim individual medalist honors. Kylie Lumino of Fort Madison was second with a 42. Vanessa Kessel placed 10th for Fairfield with a 50, Aries Wagner and Kylie Felt each shot 61 to place 21st and 22nd respectively, Addison Qualters was 23rd with a 63, and Kate Brecount placed 25th also with a 63.

Head coach Makenzie Champ reflected on a busy day of hosting while also managing her team. “There’s a lot that goes into hosting a meet, so I was a little distracted with admin,” Champ said. “We got drizzled on a little, but overall the weather wasn’t bad. It was great to see the same faces we saw on Monday. It helps me get to know the girls. Our focus is always on the girls having fun — I think we accomplished that. We also successfully hosted a JV scramble on two holes, which helps new girls practice golf. We had lots of participants today.”

When asked about the difference between Monday’s first-place finish at Washington and Thursday’s fourth-place result at home, Champ offered a candid assessment. “Maybe the girls got too comfortable at their home course,” she said. “We’re just getting started though.”
