After 44 years of service, Hotel Ottumwa will close its doors on May 31. While two developers expressed interest in the property, ownership was ultimately unable to reach a viable agreement regarding its future.

The Schwartz family purchased the hotel in 1982, initially operating under the name Parkview Plaza. What began with the Knights of Columbus as its first tenant grew into Jim Schwartz’s vision to fully restore Hotel Ottumwa. Over the decades, the hotel became a cornerstone of hospitality in the region, hosting weddings, reunions, and special occasions, while the Tom-Tom Tap and Second Street Café served as longstanding gathering places for the community.

Jim Schwartz was a dedicated leader who believed deeply in the city of Ottumwa. His children contributed to the restoration efforts over the years, and Lori Schulte, who joined the team in 1983, became a partner in 2001.

Hotel Ottumwa will remain open during regular hours through May 31:

  • Lobby Café: Daily, 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Tom-Tom Tap: Daily, 11 a.m. – 1 a.m.
  • Hotel Reservations: Available through May 30
  • Banquets: Contact Lori Schulte for remaining availability
  • DoorDash: Storefront operations will continue as usual

As part of its final chapter, Hotel Ottumwa will host a “Final Farewell Concert” on May 30 in the upstairs ballroom, marking one last opportunity to experience the historic venue. Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.

Community members are encouraged to visit during the final weeks and reflect on the memories created over the past four decades. While the future of the building remains uncertain, it is hoped the property will continue to serve as a meaningful part of the Ottumwa community.

Hotel Ottumwa extends its sincere gratitude to its employees and customers for their years of support.
