An economist with the National Pork Producers Council says a coalition representing millions of farmers is asking Congress for a fix to California’s Proposition 12.

Holly Cook Anderson tells Brownfield a letter was sent to House leadership this week.

“It was signed by almost 400 other agricultural groups, just reiterating the issues created by Proposition 12, the threat that it poses to our industries, and also the costs that are associated with this throughout the supply chain and ultimately falling on consumers,” she says.

She says the American Veterinary Medical Association is also opposed to the animal confinement law.

“The American Veterinary Medical Association and the Association for Swine Veterinarians have stated that there is no benefit to animal welfare that’s associated with Proposition 12 and that farmers working with their veterinarians are able to provide the best animal health considerations for their individual farms,” she says.

Anderson says the coalition supports inclusion of the Save Our Bacon Act into the House farm bill proposal.  Proponents say it would protect access to interstate commerce and avoid a patchwork of regulations.

Other organizations joining the coalition include the American Farm Bureau Federation, National Cattleman’s Beef Association, American Soybean Association, National Corn Growers Association, National Milk Producers Federation, National Turkey Federation, and more.
