Today we pause to remember and honor Harold Clarence DeGear, a dedicated member of the Iowa State Patrol, who gave his life in the line of duty on February 19, 1954.
On the evening of February 18, Patrolman DeGear was conducting a routine traffic stop on 6th Street SW near 20th Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids. As he stood outside his patrol car writing a citation, another vehicle attempted to pass a truck in the area. In a tragic turn of events, that vehicle struck the rear of Trooper DeGear’s patrol car, crushing him between the two vehicles.
He was rushed to a local hospital, where he fought for his life. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Patrolman DeGear was more than a trooper—he was a husband, a father, and a proud American veteran. Before serving the people of Iowa, he served his country honorably as a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran during both World War II and the Korean War. For six and a half years, he wore the uniform of the Iowa Highway Patrol with dedication and integrity.
He left behind a grieving wife and a two-year-old son, along with colleagues and a community who deeply felt his loss.
More than seven decades later, we continue to remember Patrolman DeGear’s courage, service, and sacrifice. His commitment to protecting others—both at home and abroad—stands as a lasting testament to his character. His watch may have ended, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who honor the fallen.
He will never be forgotten.
