Part # 4
A closer look at records tied to the disappearance of Johnny Gosch reveals a detail that could reshape how one nearby incident is viewed.
While reviewing an earlier account, a location error was discovered in a post about Jim, a 15-year-old newspaper carrier who was attacked while delivering for the Des Moines Register. The assault didn’t happen on the 500 block of 45th Street as first believed — it occurred on the 500 block of 42nd Street. After correcting the map, the attack site appeared strikingly close to a cluster of related case markers. Most notably, it is the same street from which Johnny Gosch was abducted nearly four years earlier.
The similarities between the two incidents are hard to ignore. Both victims were young paper carriers working early-morning routes. Jim was 15; Johnny was just shy of 13. Both encounters happened around the same time of day and within roughly half a mile of each other. Jim reported being ambushed from behind by a man wearing a camouflage poncho — a detail that loosely echoes an eyewitness account in Johnny’s case describing a tall figure approaching from the shadows behind him. That alone isn’t proof of a connection, especially since Johnny’s case involves multiple possible suspects, but it does raise questions.
Criminal history shows it isn’t unusual for repeat offenders to operate in familiar territory. The serial predator known as the Original Night Stalker repeatedly struck within the same neighborhoods, sometimes targeting victims only doors apart. If Johnny’s abductor had succeeded once in that area, it’s conceivable they might have returned years later, believing attention had faded.
Additional threads add to the intrigue. Another carrier, Mike Fackler, reported a suspicious encounter nearby, though later accounts conflict on whether he was actually chased. The dark blue vehicle linked to Johnny’s disappearance reportedly carried plates from Warren County — the same county where the city of Indianola saw two similar attempted abductions. Investigators also noted that the driver of that car asked Johnny for directions to 86th Street, which is near the area where Mike’s incident occurred.
