A domestic incident at a residence prompted police involvement after reports of one individual restricting another’s movement and causing injury.

On February 23 at approximately 11:34 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department was dispatched to the 100 block of W. Finley in Ottumwa for a reported domestic abuse incident, according to court documents.

Court records state that Aaron Brown, 35, and the victim had been residing together. Law enforcement reported that the victim told officers Brown stood between her and the door, preventing her from leaving. According to the criminal complaint, Brown admitted to officers that he had positioned himself between the victim and the exit so she could not leave.

Documents further allege that Brown took the victim’s phone. Officers stated that when they arrived on scene, Brown handed the phone to them. The complaint also states that the victim reported Brown smacked her hand while she was attempting to leave the residence, causing injury. Officers observed redness on the victim’s hand, according to official reports.

Authorities arrested Brown and transported him to the Wapello County Jail. He is being held on a $2,000 cash/surety bond, records show.

A no-contact order was issued February 24, according to filings in Wapello County court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 5.

Brown is charged with false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor, and domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness (first offense), according to court documents.
