Local pork producers are proud to participate in the Pork in the Pantry program, helping fight food insecurity across the community. This year, the organization donated pork to Blessings Food Kitchen, WYD Inc., and Milestone Area Agency on Aging, ensuring families in need have access to high-quality, nutritious protein.

Organized by the Iowa Pork Producers Association, Pork in the Pantry provides funding of up to $1,000 per county to help purchase pork for donation to local food pantries. County pork producer organizations coordinate the purchasing and distribution, and the association reimburses the cost, making it simple and efficient to give back locally.

“Food insecurity remains a real issue in Iowa, and programs like Pork in the Pantry allow us to make a direct impact in our own communities,” said board member Larry Kinsinger. “As pork producers, we care about giving back, and we’re proud to help provide high-quality protein to those who need it most.”

In addition to supporting Iowans facing food insecurity, many county organizations purchase pork locally, which helps support small businesses and strengthens the local economy. Meat is one of the most requested items at food banks, making programs like this essential to ensuring people receive balanced, nutritious meals.

Pork in the Pantry is now in its third year. In 2024, 39 county pork producer organizations across Iowa participated, donating more than $45,000 worth of pork—providing approximately 60,000 servings of protein to individuals and families in need.

Pork producers in Wapello County encourage community members and organizations to get involved and help make a difference.
