Pella police were called to investigate a domestic assault involving a male suspect. This report details the allegations and the suspect’s subsequent arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence.
Incident Overview: On December 31, at approximately 11:20 PM, Pella police responded to a report of a domestic assault in the 600 block of Huber Street.
Details of the Incident: The suspect, Daniel Sanders, 23, of Pella, allegedly tackled the victim, who is in a relationship with him. According to court filings, Sanders was on top of the victim and placed his arm on her face and neck, applying pressure. The victim reported that he had his arm on her neck for about ten seconds, causing her difficulty in breathing. Additionally, Sanders is accused of pulling the victim’s hair during the assault.
Following the incident, Sanders was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was later released.
Subsequent Traffic Incident: On January 1, at approximately 9:35 PM, the Pella Police Department observed Sanders traveling eastbound on Washington Street, near W. 5th Street. Law enforcement activated radar, which indicated that Sanders was driving at 43 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. Officers initiated a traffic stop, and Sanders stopped at the intersection of W. 3rd and Liberty Street.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers detected the smell of alcohol on Sanders’ breath. A preliminary breath test (PBT) revealed a BAC of .118. After being taken to the Pella Police Department, Sanders used a DataMaster, yielding a result of .110.
Charges and Legal Proceedings: Sanders is currently detained at the Marion County Jail facing charges from both incidents:
- Domestic abuse assault of a pregnant person, impeding the flow of air/blood (Class D Felony)
- Operating while under the influence, 1st offense (Serious Misdemeanor)
A $6,000 surety bond was posted on January 2, and a no-contact order was issued the same day. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 8.
