Former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts is expected to resolve his federal criminal case through a plea agreement, according to recent court filings.

Roberts was arrested by federal immigration enforcement agents in September and later charged with federal weapons violations, with prosecutors alleging he unlawfully possessed firearms while lacking legal status to be in the United States. His case had been scheduled to go to trial in March, but documents filed with the court show his attorneys have been negotiating with federal prosecutors, leading to a pending plea deal.

The specific terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. A hearing is scheduled for January 22, when Roberts is expected to formally address the plea before a judge.
