The Fairfield Art Association is proud to announce a new exhibit, “Reflections of Painted Tables” by artist Suzan Bates Kessel, opening December 5th in the Hallway Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center (FA&CC).
The Collection
The exhibit features hand-painted tables showcasing views of the Jefferson County Courthouse from various locations around Fairfield. Each piece tells a unique story of the community’s landmark building through Kessel’s artistic lens.
The first table, “Opening Night,” captures a memorable scene from December 2007 during the FA&CC’s grand opening. The piece depicts the courthouse’s reflection in the front windows of the FA&CC during a heavy snowstorm—a moment that left a lasting impression on those who witnessed it. Fittingly, this exhibit opening falls on the 18th anniversary of the FA&CC’s opening weekend.
With five additional tables available to paint in the Atrium, Kessel’s inspiration led her to various locations throughout town. The collection eventually grew to include “North B Street View of the Courthouse,” “Steeple view from the McElhinney House,” “Broadway and Main Street View of Courthouse,” “If You Could See the Courthouse from Dorothy Bell’s Garden,” and the final piece, “Courthouse Toast.”
Art Meets Function
These unique tables have provided an artful gathering and dining experience for visitors at the FA&CC over the years and were even featured in a magazine article about the facility.
Due to the artist’s personal connection to the FA&CC as co-founder of the facility, Kessel has created archival canvas and mounted prints of each table that will be displayed and available for purchase. A percentage of sales will benefit the Fairfield Art Association, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in the coming year and has its home in the FA&CC.
