Matthew J. Hassinen, 53, of Sigourney, died at 3:42 a.m. November 22, 2025 at home.
He was born October 31, 1972 in Wauwautosa, WI to John and Patricia Thomas Hassinen. He married Kari Hatfield December 7, 2013.
A 1991 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Matthew had worked as a forklift operator for DuroLast Roofing for over 20 years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. He loved spending time with family.
Surviving is his wife, Kari; a son, Cody Hassinen (Carly Still) of Newton; a stepson, Jarrod (Christina) Hatfield of Oskaloosa; 4 grandchildren, Abagael, Austin, Cooper, Casten; a brother, Todd (Sara) Hassinen of Albia; stepsiblings, Ashlee (Jerry) Smithart of Sigourney, Schawn (Shannon) Freese of Delta, Beth Jorgenson of Dover, AR, Jennifer (Ty) Ware of Bloomfield; his father John (Laura) Hassinen of Hamilton, IL; his mother, Patricia (Michael) Freese of Bloomfield; an uncle, Russell Thomas of MI, mother-in-law, Phyllis Simmons of Ottumwa; sisters-in-law, Stacey (Mark) Mancuso of Pierre, SD, Tracy (Peggy Moore) Hatfield of Ottumwa; brother-in-law, Kevin Hatfield of Ottumwa; 2 cousins, Erin (Chris) Bolda, Nikki (Matt) Brinkley; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father-in-law, Terry Simmons; 2 aunts, Janet Gennari, Audrey Hart.
His body has been cremated.
Memorial visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, November 28th, at Reece Funeral Home.
A time to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
