On October 31, the Oskaloosa Police Department received a call regarding a burglary at a residence in the 500 block of N. Market Street. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the resident, who reported that her apartment had been severely damaged.

Law enforcement observed that the entire apartment had been destroyed beyond repair. Court documents indicate that the furnishings within the apartment were irreparably damaged, and the kitchen appliances had their doors broken off. Additionally, all windows in the apartment were shattered, and the front door had been forcibly kicked in. The security cameras mounted outside the apartment were also found to be broken and removed.

During questioning, the resident identified Nyejai Chancy, 23, from Pompano Beach, Florida, as the individual who had visited her apartment earlier that day in search of a package. Chancy allegedly claimed that a package had been delivered to her address and threatened the resident, accusing her of stealing it.

The resident informed authorities that she had allowed Chancy into her apartment to look for the package. It was reported that Chancy later entered another apartment for the same reason. Feeling unsafe, the resident decided to leave her apartment.

While away, she received notifications on her phone from her surveillance cameras, which showed Chancy vandalizing her property and throwing a scooter at one of the windows.

After identifying Chancy, law enforcement arrested him, and he was subsequently detained at the Mahaska County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 10, and a cash bond of $15,000 has been set.

According to police affidavit records, the total damage to the residence exceeds $10,000. Chancy faces charges of first-degree criminal mischief (a Class C felony) and third-degree burglary (a Class D felony).
