The Greater Jefferson County Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2025-26 academic year, with the application window opening November 1st and closing February 1st.
High school seniors from Fairfield and Pekin are invited to apply through the Foundation’s scholarship website at www.gjcfscholarships.org. Questions about the application process can be directed to the Foundation office at 641-472-0758.
Five Decades of Community Investment
The scholarship program began in 1988 when the Hazel Scoval Samuelson estate provided the initial funding to support a graduating senior. Since its inception, the program has expanded significantly, now awarding more than $150,000 annually to local students pursuing higher education.
As the Foundation marks its 50th anniversary of giving in Jefferson County in 2025, organizers express deep gratitude to the donors who have made these educational opportunities possible.
45 Scholarships Available
The program currently offers 45 different scholarships, many established by longtime Jefferson County residents seeking to create a lasting family legacy while supporting graduating seniors. These scholarships reflect diverse academic interests, including education, agriculture, mathematics and science, music, healthcare, forestry, conservation, art, and technology.
Several scholarships are connected to local employers. The Dexter Laundry Company and Crystal Group provide awards to children of their employees. Pass-through scholarships include those funded by Ben and Judy Bower, John and Deb Martin, and the Jefferson County Pork Producers.
The Pete and Fern Crafton and Howard and Donna Clark scholarships are unique in offering opportunities to both current graduates and alumni of Fairfield and Pekin high schools.
New Scholarships Added
Two new scholarships have recently been added to the program. Dr. Stephen Van Tasell, a Fairfield dentist, created the Van Tasell Medical Scholarship, which will launch in 2026 and support two recipients from Fairfield or Pekin pursuing studies in pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, nursing, or other medical fields.
The most recent addition is the James and Marilyn Taylor Scholarship, created for graduating Fairfield High School seniors studying agriculture.
