Two Fairfield residents are facing dozens of animal neglect charges following a multi-agency operation that resulted in the rescue of 61 animals from what authorities described as “neglectful, unsanitary, and hazardous” living conditions.
Ellen Marie Telleen, 44, and Krysta Marie Telleen, 26, both of Fairfield, were each charged with 48 counts of animal neglect, classified as simple misdemeanors. The charges stem from an investigation that began on August 27, 2025, when the Fairfield Police Department received a report of possible animal neglect at a residence in the 100 block of Cardinal Drive.
The initial report indicated that a large number of animals were being kept in extremely poor and potentially dangerous living conditions. Fairfield Police officers launched an in-depth investigation by collecting statements, making observations, and gathering other evidence to assess the validity of the allegations.
Based on what was gathered during the investigation, officers established probable cause and successfully obtained a search warrant for the property. The warrant was executed on September 2, 2025, with critical assistance from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and the Fairfield Veterinary Clinic.
When officers and animal welfare professionals entered the home, they encountered conditions that posed serious risks to both the animals and any human occupants. Many animals were found confined in cramped kennels, with several forced to share small enclosures. The animals were covered in feces and living in unsafe conditions without access to adequate food, water, or proper veterinary care.
The rescue operation resulted in the removal of 61 animals from the residence:
- 38 dogs
- 10 cats
- 13 various small animals
All rescued animals were safely transferred to animal welfare organizations where they are receiving necessary treatment and rehabilitation.
Both Ellen and Krysta Telleen were transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility, where they were booked and processed. They were subsequently released after posting $300 each for bond.
